Sunscreen 101: Don’t Get Burned!

Posted by Bonnie | August 17, 2017

There is no better way to explain the importance of sunscreen than by quoting the wise words of Benjamin Franklin: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Sunscreen is no longer a beach-bag item used on vacation and during summer lounging at the pool, but instead has risen in importance to a medicine-cabinet staple! From when the sun rises in the morning until it falls at night, regardless of the time of year, the skin must be protected. As long as the sun is shining, SPF is required!

To inspire you to add a coat of sunscreen to your self-care routine, consider these facts:

  • Crinkly skin, liver spots, and wrinkles are signs of sun damage—not aging.
  • UV rays break down the “glue” of your skin, otherwise known as collagen, which maintains smooth, tight, and youthful skin. When the collagen breaks down, so does your skin.
  • Sun damage is cumulative: even ten minutes of exposure a day over the course of a lifetime is enough to cause major problems.
  • UVA rays penetrate glass, so your skin can be damaged even when you’re sitting near a window in your office or a classroom or driving a car.

The only way to protect the skin from the medical and aesthetic side effects of sun exposure is to apply the right sunscreen.
